"It is a rather variable job"
Hi, my name is Severin and I am 17 years old. I live in an area called North Finchley with my lovely Italian host family.
I had some problems with my first homestay but recently I was able to move to where I live now which is relieving. My host mother Anna-Lisa lives with her mother and her nine-year-old son in a big house. The location is very practical because it’s near all the popular stores and restaurants in Finchley. Every morning I get up at 7:00 and after eating breakfast I have to walk for about 15 minutes to the tube station Woodside Park. I then have to travel to Euston from where I once again have to walk for 15 minutes and then arrive at my workplace: St Giles London Central.
On a normal day, I usually work from 09:00 to 16:30. My main tasks are issuing student ID`s, processing new bookings and replying to enquiries of clients. It is a rather variable job. Once for example, I had to visit several hotels and rate them on a scale from 1-5. This helped me and my colleagues to recommend the hotels to students who are looking for accommodation whilst they are studying at our school. That was an interesting experience because I could see the differences of hotels ranging from two stars to 4 stars. The team is very helpful and humorous. Usually, I work with three other employees in the student services office (reception) where students can express their concerns, requests or complaints. The biggest challenge for me is understanding the students.
At St Giles Central London, you can start studying at the Elementary Level (A1) and sometimes when the students have strong accents and have problems compiling complex sentences, it takes a long time for both parties to understand each other.
In my free time on weekdays, I mostly stay at home and play videogames and/or watch movies. On weekends however, I like to meet with friends and explore the city during the day. A while ago, we visited Bastien, who lives and works in Brighton and we were able to watch a beautiful sunset at the beach. Up until now, we were pretty lucky regarding the weather. This weekend was very warm during the day and the sun shone all day long. Sadly, this is going to change soon as it is getting colder every day.
So far, I enjoyed most of my time here but I am looking forward to returning to Switzerland. Have a nice day!
